Lord Shiva Vs Lord Vishnu quick overview

Lord Shiva is considered to be the third god in the trinity. He possesses the power of destruction and purification of the world. It is after this destruction that Lord Brahma starts creation once again. For the believers of Lord, he is the supreme power in this universe. Devotees believe that he can be easily pleased but he becomes angry easily also. His name means kind, auspicious and gracious. He is also known to be very truthful to his wife Sati and later on to Parvati.

Lord Shiva and Sati

Goddess Sati was the daughter of King Daksha and wife of Lord Shiva. Once, Daksha conducted yagna without inviting Lord Shiv and Sati. But Sati wanted to attend the yagna and went to her father’s kingdom. Upon arriving there, Sati could not bear the ignoring mentality and insult from her father so she immolated herself in the yagnakunda. Hearing this Lord Shiv became furious and started performing Rudra Tandava, carrying the body of Sati. Due to the fire from his third eye, the kingdom of Yaksha was wiped out. In order to make him calm, lord Vishnu severed the body of Sati and threw it on earth. The twelve places where her body parts fell were later known as the Shakti Peethas.

Lord Shiva and Parvati

After the immolation of Sati, Shiv began the life of an ascetic. But Sati took birth as Parvati as the daughter of Himavan. When Parvati grew old, she knew about her previous birth as Sati and started tapas to please Shiv and re-unite with him. Parvati tried many ways to please Shiv but he was adamant.

Parvati took the help of Kamadeva, Lord of love. He tried to strike Shiva with arrow of love. He got angry and reduced Kamadeva into ashes with his powerful third eye. Later, upon the request of Rati, Kamadeva’s wife, Shiv revived Kamadeva. Parvati, adamant to please lord Shiv started severe penance. Soon, because of Parvati’s devotion and truthfulness and compulsion by sages, Lord Shiv married her on the month of Phalguna, a day before Amavasya. This night is known as Mahashivaratri, the night of Shiv.

Mahashivaratri

Mahashivaratri is being observed even today by devotees of Lord Shiv, across the world. They observe night vigil and fasting during this festival and also visit some of the important shrines.

Another version of the legend of Mahashivaratri says that Goddess Parvati had done severe tapas to destroy any evil force that might harm her husband. It is believed that she prayed for her husband’s long life on the day of moonless night in the month of Phalguna. Continuing this tradition, womenfolk also do poojas and offer prayers to Lord Shiva – the ideal husband- wishing their husband’s good health and long life.
