Celebrated in month of Bhaadrapada in Hindu calendar, the fest lasts for ten days of waxing moon period (from Shukla chaturthi to Ananth Chaturdashi). Although Lord Ganesh is worshiped throughout the country at this very prosperous day, festivity in south Indian states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhara Pradesh and Goa is just matchless. The celebration starts with installation of Lord Ganesha’s idol in the pandals (temporary places of worship) erected by societies at whole. People decorate the structures with flower garlands, lights and other decorative items depicting religious themes. The priests chant Vedic hymns, Ganesh storta, artis and Bhajans to please the esteemed deity. It’s believed that modakas and red flowers please Shri Ganesha the most, and that’s why people worship the god with these particulars.
Considering the Hindu myths & legends, we find that the fest is celebrated on the occasion of birthday of Lord Ganesha. It’s believed that the God bestows his presence on earth in the duration of this fest. Lord Ganesha, as per traditional Hindu stories, was created by goddess Parvati out of sandalwood paste that she used for bath. The goddess created a figure and then put breath in it. She then ordered him to guard the gate until she fished her bath. Lord Shiva came to meet Parvati, but Ganesha didn’t allow him to go inside. At this, Shiva got angry and beheaded the child. Later on, when he came to know that he severed the head of his own son, he went in search of another head for the child. Shiva saw a dead elephant in the jungle. He then took elephant’s head and fixed it with Ganesha. He even declared his son as superior to all the Gods. That’s why the fest is celebrated as birthday of Ganesha.
